This is a thumbnail image of a sample Mediator Release Test (MRT) result for food sensitivity. This person is highly reactive to white potato (no more french fries!), eggplant, and peas; and moderately reactive to cauliflower, celery, sweet potato and tomato. These partial results might raise suspicion for possible nightshade sensitivity (can trigger arthritis).
MRT is new technology to diagnose and treat adverse reactions to food and chemical triggers that may be contributing to persistent symptoms, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Migraine, Fibromyalgia, and a wide range of other conditions that are inflammation-based.
MRT measures comprehensive reactions for 150 foods and chemicals in the following categories: Chemicals (such as food dyes, popular painkillers, food additives, etc.); Dairy; Flavor Enhancers (eg spices); Fruits; Vegetables; Grains; Seafood; Meats & Poultry; Miscellaneous (eg coffee, tea); and Beans/Nuts/Legumes.
Mediator Release Testing is unique from other food sensitivity tests in important ways:
- Higher accuracy: Sensitivity 94.5%, Specificity 91.7%, Split Sample Reproducibility >90%
- Measures Type 4 reactions: ELISA-based IgG or IgE testing are the most popular blood tests used by practitioners when adverse food reactions are suspected. However, approximately 75% of the dietary reactions in IBS, migraine and fibromyalgia are cell-mediated type IV hypersensitivity, a type of reaction not diagnosed with IgG or IgE methods.
- Measures reactive chemicals: MRT not only measures food reactions but clinically relevant reactions to food chemicals. Food chemicals and additives can be a significant source of persistent symptoms in sensitive individuals.
- MRT also quantifies the strength of each reaction. This allows the building of a healthy diet starting with least reactive foods first, and sequentially adding other foods to greatly improve patient outcomes.

What in your diet might be causing your IBS or other symptoms? MRT testing answers this question more accurately than other testing, and saves the frustration and time often accompanying traditional elimination diets.
